Were getting lots of questions about how Mudpaint compares to Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint! I’ll go over the main differences here. As the creators of Painted Furniture Ideas, we have a lot of experience using ASCP on furniture pieces. We have liked ASCP overall, but there are many things about Mudpaint as furniture paint that we believe make it a better overall furniture paint.

Mudpaint VS Chalk Paint for furniture painting

The creators of Mudpaint spent a year working on a new vintage paint formula that would be smoother, more durable and with better coverage than other furniture paints, but that would also have a nice smooth, antique-y finish.

Here are some of the main differences:

Ingredients: Mudpaint has no chalk in it, so it doesn’t have the gritty texture.  It has some earthy ingredients that give it the same antique look, but with smoother particles that contribute to it’s creamy texture.

Application: Mudpaint is smoother and creamier than ASCP. ASCP has a kind of gritty texture and the first coat of ASCP always goes on pretty streaky. We have used a lot of Chalk Paint and have never been able to get away with just one coat of paint. In our experience the first coat always looks completely uneven.

Coverage: Mudpaint has very even coverage. In our experience ASCP coverage is very uneven and hence needs more paint to cover the area. It goes on too thick in some areas and too thin in others which results in more paint being needed overall in order to cover the whole piece evenly.

Dripping: Neither paint is likely to drip excessively.

Finish: As far as the final finish. ASCP has a nice finish, once you put two full coats on. Mudpaint also has a nice vintage looking finish, which is a little creamier and smoother looking than ASCP.

Mudpaint customers rave about the coverage and smooth look that Mudpaint has. Mudpaint is very easy to apply and takes very little skill to make a piece look nice!
